The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) desired to replace the existing Interstate 40 (I-40) east bound and west bound bridges over Big Sallisaw Creek in Sequoyah County. The project was generally located three (3) miles west of the I-40/SH-59 Interchange in Sallisaw, Oklahoma in a rural area. It was ODOT’s intention to replace these existing bridges in lieu of a complete rehabilitation. After conducting bridge hydraulics analysis, the existing hydraulics were found to be in satisfactory condition. However, once the costs for rehabilitation and replacement were compared, there was not a big price difference, and ODOT ultimately chose to construct a new bridge. All new bridge components were designed in accordance with the 7th Edition of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and ODOT Bridge Design Policies.
